On September 14, Doubao Phone Assistant consumer version was officially released; two days later, on September 16, Nubia NaviX Ultra equipped with the assistant will officially go on sale. ZTE said this is the world's first AI agent phone it has introduced, and the industry also regards it as the world's first commercially available AI agent phone. Chinese manufacturers have thus taken the lead in pushing AI phones into the 'second half.'

Over the past year or so, the competitive focus of AI phones has been 'how many large models are packed into the phone.' Since 2024, large models have moved from the cloud to on-device, and mainstream Android flagships have generally achieved local deployment of 7-billion-parameter models. But earlier 'AI phones' were mostly phones loaded with feature packs that can chat, retouch photos, and summarize—AI was just one capability inside the phone, and users still had to open apps and perform operations step by step. The industry summarized this stage as 'on-device large model deployment and pre-installed AI features.'

In the second half, the variable is the 'agent.' Phones are no longer just passively answering questions; instead, they understand the specific scenario the user is in and complete a series of operations on the user's behalf: able to see the screen, remember preferences, and get things done. Whether it is Apple's Siri or the newly released Doubao Phone Assistant, both are AI agent software built on apps and cooperating with phone manufacturers at the system level. The assistant is not just a standalone application, but serves as the 'capability layer' of the operating system.

According to Doubao's official introduction, compared with the technical preview released at the end of last year, this consumer version places more emphasis on stability and daily usability, focusing on core experiences such as interaction, task execution, local memory, and retrieval. Users can wake up the assistant through voice, a dedicated AI key, and other methods; the AI key has fingerprint authentication capability, so after identity verification, the assistant can be called to execute tasks without unlocking again. Voice wake-up has been specifically optimized for far-field and noisy scenarios. Local memory and retrieval capabilities allow the assistant to remember user preferences and provide operation suggestions that better fit personal habits in subsequent tasks.

'Being able to see' is a major highlight of this upgrade. Users can have the assistant continue processing tasks based on the current screen content without taking screenshots or switching apps. In a demo scenario, point the phone camera at the living room and say, 'Help me choose a cabinet within 1.2 meters and priced under 1,000 yuan,' and the AI assistant on the screen will open an e-commerce platform, compare products, and give recommendations. This scenario that previously only appeared in technology companies' demo videos will actually land in consumers' hands starting September 16.

The first new phone equipped with Doubao Phone Assistant is Nubia NaviX Ultra. The device has obtained network access license from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and manufacturer Nubia has also completed the filing of the agent large model earlier. From technical verification to compliant mass production, a commercial loop is taking shape. ZTE calls it the world's first AI agent phone, and the industry also regards it as the world's first commercially available AI agent phone.

From 'being able to chat' to 'being able to work,' AI phones are shifting gears. When the industry is no longer satisfied with pre-installed features but competes on 'how many things the phone can do for you,' the implementation of the agent capability layer will become the key to the next stage of competition. Chinese manufacturers have taken the lead in commercial deployment, providing a new reference for the development of AI phones worldwide.
